But as often happens in the course of the writing, the character took over, and I discovered that Gemma was much more vulnerable and conflicted and infuriating and all those yummy things that make people into people. She finally gets to go to London to finishing school where she meets three girls that lives will forever be altered by her own.
There are also a ton of misogynistic comments, but the book tries to battle those a bit. Much better than Twilight’s Edward in my opinion. No, they’re right there next to her being just as wonderful as her. Well, because this book had a touch of the supernatural suspense that I don’t handle well.
I don’t know what it is but I am not a fan of the writing style. They would be alive, adored, needed. Stay up to date on new reviews.
Those feelings—the desire to be loved and understood, the fear of disappointing others, longings and yearnings, fear of and curiosity about the unknown—are timeless. My one relief is that I had the sense to borrow this from the library instead of buying it outright.
We also need to be aware, as women, that we often hold ourselves back. I read the Chinese translation of this book, and I’m not sure whether the translator had mistakenly make the Main Character a young lady from the s Victorian era sound like an air-headed modern teenager, or was it Libba Bray’s own fault for giving her own MC such kind of misplaced voice. It’s fierce enmity at first sight, with a variety of nasty pranks exchanged until Gemma discovers an incriminating secret about Felicity.
This is a bit of a delicious irony. Okay, so I was a little slow discovering this, but since Rebel Angels just came out, I figured I would read the first in the series first. View all 6 comments. The first book, A Great and Terrible Beauty had me absolutely hooked from the first page.
The story was frustratingly predictable, the characters one-dimensional, and the writing drab. View all 10 comments. His exoticness is constantly brought up and Gemma is shamed by herself and her peers for liking him.
We’ve got to forgive ourselves that. In Mary Dowd’s diary, Mary says that she has sacrificed Mother Elena’s little girl to get back the decreased power of Sarah, after grewt this, Gemma thinks of her mother in a different way and hates her for what she terribble done. I suppose I meant that having power is both an awesome and a terrifying thing.
I just love when stories do that – when I become so invested in them they seem to come to life, and for a short while I’m terible part of that world. Nov 07, Rick Riordan rated it really liked it.

There were many things that I found enchanting about this book. Sixteen-year-old Gemma is sent to a girls’ boarding school in England after her mother’s mysterious death. Daughter of Smoke and Bone 4. I also enjoyed the dynamic of newly forming relationship between 4 very different girls who all are plagued by their real even nowadays problems and who find an outlet and some semblance of temporary freedom in the Realms.
Not forgetting a carnal longing, which is far more unfamiliar to these once girls who find themselves becoming young women. A Great and Terrible Beauty vray a solid three stars.

There were times where I had to read a paragraph or a sentence more than once just to understand what was happening. Seriously, I have no idea. The story and characters are engaging and mysterious with so much more bubbling under the surface. I do not recommend it.

The characters in this book were wonderful. And she is offered, in turn, love and trust, anger and mistrust.
One by one, night after night, the girls came together. Getting high is fun.

That sense of discovering your characters and how they react is part of the joy of writing fiction for me. The main character, Gemma was a problematic teen who held power she didn’t quite understand.
