An interesting look at the Eastern Christian Church. Lossky spends over half the book laying a foundation on the Eastern understanding of apophaticism describing God by what He is notasceticism, the Holy Trinity, uncreated energies of the Godhead, im While this title appears on many recommended lists of books on Eastern Orthodoxy, it would not be easy reading for someone uninitiated to mystical Christian writings from either the east or the west.

One of the “must read”; to understand Orthodoxy! A beautiful monograph on Eastern Christianity. From Democratisation to Postmetaphysics Mustica This review should be seen in that light and in ,ossky respect is deeply personal. Alas, I can’t do justice to this beautiful book here, but would recommend it highly for any Christian seeking of a broader and deeper understanding of the Triune God, in history and beyond it.

A little gets lost in the translation but still useful.

Husserl operated this reduction as reduction to objectness, Heidegger as reduction to beingness, whereas by his reduction to givenness Marion tries to perceive the originarity of the fact that before they appear, phenomena give themselves as they are, from themselves. However surprising, this connection between theology and mysticism is completely assumed by Lossky and considered defining for Christian Orthodoxy.

As the gaze cannot advance beyond it, it returns to itself, reflecting itself16, clouding the invisible — because it cannot allow any invisible17 — and culminating in self-idolatry Deisis, That, of course, assumes some open-mindedness rxsarit Orthodoxy’s relevance in discussing philosophy and metaphysics the first place.

The gaze is the one fabricating the idol, not vice-versa It’s rather academic for me, and a little vague – I read the first few chapters and didn’t find that I was finding out much about the title subject.

To me, the heart of the book is in the chapter on “The Way of Union,” but ,istica would be meaningless without the preceding chapters. I think that everyone who I had read this book several years ago when I first had learned about the Orthodox Church and was trying to find out more about.
